British place names preserve Old English and Norse spellings that stopped matching speech centuries ago, and the endings compress hard: -cester becomes ster, -wich becomes ich, -burgh becomes bruh. So Leicester is two syllables, Lester. Learn the endings and most of the map becomes readable.
